This is the story of my life. Or better yet, the story of two lives: the one my spiritual Master saved me from, and the one he gave me. Both concerned the same person, but one life was transient and full of confusion, while the other is external and full of knowledge and bliss. This is the story of a miracle, for me at least. It is the story of how I was given a life of service and joy.

You could save my story begins with my birth. But now I know it goes back to many lifetimes to a past too distance for me to know or understand. If cameras have existed that long ago, I imagine we would see on these pages photos of kings and paupers, animals and humans, the famous and the infamous. all being born, dying and then being born again.

But this chapter of my story begins, like all life stories, from the day I was delivered anew into a new life with a new family. I was born in Palo Alto, California, into an affluent and somewhat unusual family -- or at least the generation before my parents was unusual. My paternal grandfather, bent on seeking adventure and escaping a life in the American suburbs, left for Tahiti on a sailing ship before my father was born. The man, I thought as my grandfather was, my grandmother's fifth husband and he made millions of dollars from inventing the floating lids used on petroleum tanks. My grandfather was generous with his money and supplemented the income my father made in advertising.
